The Primary School (ages 7 - 10)

The English branch of the Primary school consists of grades two, three and four. The school day is divided into free work, formal instruction and language projects with the pupils of the German branch. The German and English branches are also together for lunch, for the recess periods and for the afternoon activities.

Following the Montessori principle of mixed-age groups, the children have the experience of being the youngest, being in the middle and being the oldest. Each age-group works on the prescribed curriculum and the learning goals of that particular grade. For the free-work periods, the children establish their individual weekly plans at the beginning of the week, and these plans must then be approved by the teachers. These weekly plans are based on the goals and topics for that particular school year, which are posted in the classrooms and are known to everybody. Cultural skills such as reading, writing and mathematics are learned primarily in these free-work periods.

Formal instruction is provided for the subjects: art, music, sport, ethics and literature. All pupils in the primary school also spend one hour per week in the science lab, where they carry out scientific experiments under the supervision of a teacher.

From the second grade onwards, the children of the English class also learn to read and write in German. By the end of the fourth grade, it is expected that they will be able to make use of information in both languages in oral and written form. Their spelling in German, however, cannot be expected to reach the level of native speakers of the same age.

The children learn individually, with partners, in a team and within the entire group. They work in accordance with their own plans and decisions but are also able to follow given instructions and assignments.
